Kill The Wuzgunna!
I know you're asking....what the f*ck is a "wuzgunna"?
A Wuzgunna is that nasty little beastie that escapes your lips whenever you need an excuse as to why you didn't do what you told yourself you were going to do. If you're a parent, you've heard this a bazillion times.
"I wuzgunna clean my room!"
"I wuzgunna do my homework!"
Even as adults we invoke the wuzgunna whenever we get busted...whether at home, at work, or play.
The first step to ridding your life of this infestation is to realize that it's a sign that you really didn't want to do what you told yourself you were going to do. It doesn't matter if it's household chores, getting some exercise, making better eating choices...the wuzgunna appears every time you don't really want to do those things. Naturally we hide our choice to be lazy or procrastinate or not to do what we should do behind the screen of 'lacking motivation/willpower'.
Honestly, that's crap.
It's not that you lack the motivation or willpower to do those things, it's simply that they're just not that important to you.
So, instead of invoking the 'W word' the next time you catch yourself, or get caught, not doing what you said you were going to do, replace it with 'I chose not to because it's not that important to me'.
Now, this may seem silly and you're wondering what the purpose of this shift is, let's look at a couple examples to show how powerful it can be.
Instead of saying:
- I was going to eat better, but....
- I was going to call you back, but...
- I was going to create that video, but...
- I was going to go to the gym, but...
Say these things:
- I choose not to eat better because my health isn't that important to me.
- I chose not to call you back because you/my business isn't that important to me.
- I chose not to create that video/write that blog post/record that podcast because building my brand isn't that important to me.
- I chose not to go to the gym because my physical fitness isn't that important to me.
You see, life is all about choices, and choosing the proper vocabulary helps you to create clarity on who you are, what you want, and what's truly important to you. As long as you keep hiding behind phrases like 'wuzgunna', lying about your true intentions, you're never going to make the changes in your life you need and want.
There's an old story that goes
"Three frogs were sitting on a log. Two decided to jump off. How many were left?"
Most people say one.....duh.
The correct answer is three.
Just because you make a decision doesn't mean anything is going to change.
Only by taking action do things change.
"Wuzgunna" is making a decision without taking action.
So, the next time you tell yourself you want to or are going to do something...do it. If it's a long term deal, take those first steps.
Change, clarity and answers only come from doing.
