A Lesson In NLP From Miley Cyrus

miley cyrus

Miley Cyrus? Yes. that Miley Cyrus. This morning I’m listening to a station on Pandora that I created called “Girl Power” (go ahead and judge…I know YOU’VE got guilty pleasures!) and the song “Party in the USA” played. Now, because it’s Pandora, I’ve heard this song about a jillion times…but this is the first time I’ve ever really heard this song.

The concept is simple, it’s autobiographical about her flying from Nashville to California and being nervous and overwhelmed and feeling totally out of place in her new environment.

My tummy’s turnin’ and I’m feelin’ kinda home sick
Too much pressure and I’m nervous,

Pretty simple right? You’ve been there, I’ve been there, we’ve all been in that situation.

When it came to the chorus, though, that’s where I first heard it.

That’s when the DJ dropped my favorite tune
And a Britney song was on
And a Britney song was on
And a Britney song was on

Wait for it….

So I put my hands up
They’re playing my song,
The butterflies fly away
I’m noddin’ my head like yeah
Movin’ my hips like yeah
I got my hands up,
They’re playin’ my song
I know I’m gonna be OK

There it is. A lesson in the NLP concept of changing your state within a simple 3 minute pop song.

Miley Cyrus – Party In The USA

It’s really a simple concept. Change your physical state and you can change your mental and emotional state.

Music is a very powerful medium and can shift our emotions without us even knowing. Think of the last time you heard a song that reminded you of a sad memory. You didn’t even need to be paying attention to what was playing and all of a sudden you find yourself back in that memory. Songs like that can trigger our memories and emotions.

Use Music To Your Advantage

Find some songs that get you pumped up and that put you in a high emotional state. Create a playlist and either put them in your iPod or a YouTube playlist. Then, whenever you feel you need a boost, push play, stand up, and shake your ass.

I do this in my office, affectionately called the fishbowl because of the large windows open to the shop floor.

I do it and I don’t care…

So put your hands up, nod your head, and move your hips…. and you’ll know you’re going to be ok.
